The electrocatalytic oxidation method for treating industrial wastewater is a treatment method that uses electrochemical reactions in the electrolysis process to remove harmful impurities from various types of wastewater. It is also known as the environmentally friendly water treatment technology or green water treatment technology because it does not cause secondary pollution.
The so-called electrochemical water treatment technology is the use of an external electric field to achieve the expected removal of pollutants or recovery of useful substances from wastewater through a series of designed chemical reactions, electrochemical processes, or physical processes in a specific electrochemical reactor.
The advantages of electrochemical water treatment technology are:
1. Electronic transfer only occurs between electrolysis and wastewater components, without the need for additional redox agents, avoiding secondary pollution caused by the addition of additional agents
2. The reaction conditions can be adjusted at any time by changing the applied current and voltage, with strong controllability
3. Free radicals that may be generated during the process react directly with organic pollutants in wastewater without selectivity, degrading them into carbon dioxide, water, and simple organic compounds, with little or no secondary pollution generated
4. The reaction conditions are mild, and the electrochemical process can generally be carried out at room temperature and pressure
5. The reactor equipment and its operation are generally relatively simple, and if designed reasonably, the cost is not expensive
If the scale of pollution discharge is small, on-site treatment can be achieved
When metal ions are present in wastewater, the cathode anode can act simultaneously (cathodic reduction of metal ions, anodic oxidation of organic matter) to maximize treatment efficiency and recycle valuable chemicals or metals
8. It can be treated separately or combined with other treatments, such as pre-treatment, to improve the biodegradability of wastewater
9. It has the functions of air flotation, flocculation, and disinfection
As a cleaning process, its equipment occupies a small area and is particularly suitable for sewage treatment in densely populated cities.
The electrocatalytic oxidation method has stronger redox ability than general chemical reactions, consumes less chemical agents, has strong adaptability, can recover useful substances such as metals, and is easy to achieve automation control. Therefore, it has been applied in the treatment of organic pollutant wastewater. Satisfactory results can be achieved by using electrochemical methods to treat synthetic pharmaceutical wastewater such as organic chlorine, phosphorus, and sulfur that are difficult to treat by biological methods, as well as papermaking, printing and dyeing wastewater.
